Rose Bowl Parade, up close and personal

If you haven’t seen the Rose Bowl Parade floats in person, it’s quite an experience!  Seeing all those individual flowers, stems, bark and fruit on the floats is amazing.  From afar the floats look good, but close up, they are remarkable feats of creativity and labor!  We were lucky enough to visit our friends in Pasadena again this New Year’s day…and go to the Parade.  Reason enough to consider visiting Southern California over New Year’s!  You can Tournament of Roses parade – website link, during the actual parade, or you can see them afterwards, January 1-3…but if you’re in town, you shouldn’t miss seeing them, close up and personal!

New Laundry Room look

53rd annual Newport Beach sandcastle contest

Newport Beach annual sandcastle contest

pics from last year’s Newport Beach sandcastle contest

Into building sandcastles?  Or anything else in the sand?  C’mon down to the 53rd annual event at Corona Del Mar October 5th.  Come and see sandcastle building taken to a new level at the annual Newport Beach/Corona del Mar Sandcastle Contest, where “seashore sculptors” have turned grains of wet sand into elaborate works of art for over 50 years.  This year’s theme is “It’s a Beach Party” (original, huh)!

For as little as $30 per team entry, have a chance to be recognized, win cash prizes and have a great day at the beach!   Thousands of sightseers descend on Corona del Mar State Beach to watch participants – ranging from novice to expert – construct more than 30 entries. View these creations for free as a spectator, or consider making your own for a minimal entrance fee. This long-running event is presented by Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce and attracts spectators and contest participants ranging from seasoned professionals to first–timers.  Get your team together to show your best work, or just come out to the beach to check it out and have a good time!

EPIC waves at “the Wedge” this morning!

EPIC waves this morning!

EPIC waves this morning!

WOW!  Me and about 2000 of my closest friends headed down to the Wedge on the Newport Peninsula early this morning to see these 25 foot waves.  UNBELIEVEABLE!

“The Wedge is world famous for its size and its danger, but really everywhere up and down the coast is going to be dangerous for the next couple days,” Newport Beach Fire Department Capt. Mike Halphide said.  “We’re really warning everyone coming down, whether you’re a beginner or an expert, to really think twice and talk to a lifeguard before you go in because of the conditions will just be so hazardous,” he said.

July 4th on the Newport Peninsula

It’s going to a FUN DAY today, celebrating the 4th on the Newport Peninsula.  All the local families are out in the morning for our family parade, in their red-white-blue.  But as you may know, the Peninsula will turn to a mass of people from all over the Southland, coming down to the beach to have a good time!

Thailand was great – but Newport Beach is better!

Thailand TripWe’re back home from Thailand – and a great trip it was; I was as relaxed as I’ve ever been! Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Ko Phi Phi Island were among our favorite stops. The history and culture, and then the relaxed island lifestyle, and of course the local food, made for an interesting adventure. Here’s a self-portrait we took as we were heading off in a small “long boat” to go snorkeling off Ko Phi Phi. I’ve never seen as many and as beautiful fish as we saw that day; It was surreal.

Now we’re back home and getting ready for a busy Spring in Newport Beach!  We’re booking up quickly, so click here to see availability on the Calendar.

Rose Bowl Parade Fun

What better way to start off 2014 than by attending the Rose Bowl Parade! That’s what we did this year, with a group of friends. Here’s a photo of Bill in front of the Cat-In-The-Hat float. This wasn’t our first time; We’ve enjoyed it before and thought we’d enjoy it again! The weather was brisk, but the floats and the crowd make it irresistibly fun.

TIP: Did you know you can see the floats up close and personal the following day – and admire the work put into them, all those flowers and seeds and bark? They’re all parked in Pasadena at Sierra Madre and Washington Boulevards, and admission is $10, 9-5PM on January 2nd.
